Electrostatic Model for Antenna Signal Generation From Dust Impacts

Dust impacts on spacecraft are commonly detected by antenna instruments as transient voltage perturbations. The signal waveform is generated the interaction between impact-generated plasma cloud and elements of antenna–spacecraft system. A general electrostatic model presented that includes two key interaction, namely charge recollected from impact fraction electrons cations escape to infinity. clouds escaping generate induced signals, their vastly different speeds responsible for characteristic shape waveforms. signals modeled numerically geometry system location impact. employs a Maxwell capacitance matrix keep track mutual new reduced-size constructed laboratory measurements using dust accelerator facility. equipped with four antennas: operating in monopole mode, one pair configured dipole. Submicron-sized iron particles accelerated >20 km/s used test measurements, where waveforms each recorded. provides remarkably good fit data only handful physical fitting parameters, such cations. framework analyzing applicable range space missions investigating distribution relevant environments.
